Travelling to the UK: Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

The UK Government has introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for visitors to the UK. This is now fully rolled out, and all eligible non-visa nationals — including many European passport holders — must obtain an ETA before travelling.

If you or your family members are planning to visit the UK, please ensure you check the latest entry requirements well in advance of travel.

What is an ETA?

An ETA is a digital travel permission that allows eligible nationals to travel to the UK for short stays, including:

  • Tourism

  • Business visits

  • Short-term study

  • Transit

Key resources

We recommend using the official UK Government guidance below:

  • ETA guidance & how to apply
Official information on the requirement, including how to apply via the UK ETA app or online.

  • List of eligible nationalities
Check whether your nationality requires an ETA before travelling.

  • UK visa and entry requirements checker
A simple tool to confirm whether you need an ETA, visa, or another immigration product.

  • ETA webchat support
Live assistance from Home Office officials for applicants who need help or want to check the status of their ETA. (Available Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm (UK time).)

  • ETA Partner Pack
This contains factsheets, social media, digital and physical assets, as well as guidance videos. The packs have also been translated into a number of different languages.

Travellers are encouraged to apply early to ensure a smooth journey to the UK.
