Alexander was appointed as CEO, Singapore in July 2020 and as Chief Operating Officer for APAC in August 2021. In January 2023, his COO responsibilities expanded to include the Middle East and Africa
He joined Barclays in 1998 and has over 25 years of financial services experience across various regions including the UK, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. He has held multiple leadership positions during his tenure
In his Country CEO role, he is a franchise leader across all businesses and functions overseeing the strategic agenda for Corporate and Investment Banking, Global Markets and Private Banking. His responsibilities include strengthening client relationships, promoting and integrated approach within the firm, developing relationships with regulators and governing bodies including the ABS (where he serves as a council member), cost transformation, establishing sustainable governance frameworks, people strategy and representing Barclays externally. He is also the chair and director of the subsidiary merchant bank, BMBS
As Chief Operating Officer, he is responsible for supporting growth and transformation initiatives in the region across all business lines. This includes oversight of infrastructure areas such as legal entities, operations, technology, project execution and controls. He has led several major transformational strategies, including market re-entry, platform development, cost transformation including right shoring, operational automation, technology change and organizational design. All of which have delivered material growth in revenue and returns
Previously, he held client focused leadership positions such as heading Corporate Banking across APACME and the Head of International Debt Finance, managing non-UK credit origination across EMEA and India. Earlier in his career he worked in leveraged finance and sector coverage roles
He is a member of the Asia Pacific EXCO and CIB Global Management Committee. Alexander is actively involved in the Barclays’ regional citizenship and diversity agenda, an award winner for the firm’s social work in Singapore & within the region, a board member of the AGAPE charity and a male champion for the Financial Woman’s Association of Singapore
Alexander holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from Birmingham University. Following his graduation, he undertook a post graduate research role at Leeds University.
Outside of Barclays, Alex is a non-executive Director of an Indian based fintech, CapitalXB which is focused on micro SME export finance, supporting the development of the company including raising equity, governance, strategy and regulatory engagement.
