Sunset Toast to Commemorate Her Majesty The Queen’s 94th Birthday

The British High Commission in Singapore is inviting everyone to join a sunset toast to commemorate
the 94th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen this Saturday, 13th June 2020.

Broadcast over the High Commission’s Facebook, UkinSG [bit.ly/QBTSG2020], the ceremony will begin at 7pm. In addition to the toast it will involve short speeches, musical talent and a ceremonial lowering of the Union Flag.

Viewers are asked to get involved by having their glasses charged and posting a picture of them joining the toast on their social media using #QueensBirthdayToastSG.

“The Queen is not only the head of the UK and the Commonwealth but is someone whose message of
unity and hope continues to inspire people all around the world,” says Her Excellency Kara Owen,
British High Commissioner to Singapore. “As we continue do the responsible thing and stay home to
keep our friends, families and communities safe, we turn to technology to bring us together. I
encourage everyone to join us from your homes to raise a toast to an individual who truly embodies
resilience, duty and grace.”

Queen Elizabeth II is no stranger to Singapore, having visited in 1972, 1989 and in 2006. In 1972,
she visited Toa Payoh to see Singapore’s largest HDB project at the time and met local families.
One resident, who was delighted to offer her a glass of water during her visit to his home,
preserved the glass and offered it back to her when she returned in 1989 – much to her surprise
and delight.

The Queen is one of the most loved and respected figures around the world, renowned for her
abiding sense of duty and devotion to a life of service. 68 years into her reign, Her Majesty has,
until COVID-19 restrictions came into place, continued to carry out a full programme of
engagements: from visits to charities and schools, to hosting visiting Heads of States and leading
the nation in Remembrance and celebratory events.

In addition, she remains the Royal Patron or President of over 600 charities, military
associations, professional bodies and public service organisations and is often considered as
one of the most-widely monarchs in history.
