All parents know that academics play a huge role in their children’s future, however, many often forget that having a linear education system simply won’t cut it in today’s world. Many schools have now adopted a holistic approach that will develop well-rounded individuals, including adding structured co-curricular activities that complement the formal curriculum.

Tanglin’s variety of co-curricular activities, both existing and new, enables students to broaden their horizons and experiences beyond the construct of a classroom. It also pushes them to apply their skillset to various contexts beyond their adolescent years. Podcasts, Archery, Rock Climbing, Cooking, Gymnastics and Robotics are some of the co-curricular activities available at Tanglin.

In this article, we explore 5 key reasons as to why it is important for children to join co-curricular activities.

1: It’s a Bridge Between Core Curriculum and Pastoral Care

Co-curriculum centres on well-being and allows Tanglin’s learners to flourish and achieve in all areas. Structured learning activities complement formal education and allows kids to view issues from different perspectives.

2: It Helps Children Develop Soft Skills

The most essential soft skill of tomorrow, if not today, is collaboration. To nurture well-balanced and well-adjusted individuals, it is important for children to interact with real people, face-to-face. There’s no better way to acquire the art of collaboration than by learning to connect with others through the pursuit of a shared passion. It also helps to sharpen other soft skills such as making friends, teamwork, communicating ideas and in turn, build self-confidence.

3: It pushes your child to discover their element

Sir Ken Robinson, the British educator on creativity, wrote a book titled, “The Element: Finding Your Passion Changes Everything.” As adults, some of us struggle to find our “element”. Hence imagine having the opportunity to discover that at an early age. Mr Benjamin Walker, Assistant Head of Junior School (Co-Curriculum) says,

“The ‘Element’ is where one’s talent and personal passion meet. When the two meet, it’s paradise found. When students discover their element, they feel most themselves and are inspired to achieve at their highest levels – this is what Tanglin wants for its students.”

4: It Breaks the Monotony

Homework, exams, assignments, et al can be overwhelming. Having a change of environment for a couple of hours breaks monotony, which alleviates stress and in turn, boosts your child’s mental and physical health. It also teaches them to manage their stress levels, an essential life skill so children can become well-balanced adults.

5: It Helps with University and Job Applications

Whether it’s sports, the performing arts or science, co-curricular activities allow students to hone vital life skills such as self-discipline, leadership, lateral-thinking, time management and adaptability – all of which are key attributes for university and job applications.
