What to Expect as SME's & Start-ups for 2018

What is the outlook for the Singapore economy and its growth drivers as it relates to SMEs and start-ups? What are the trends that SMEs and start-ups should focus on in the coming 12 months?

Singapore is in a transition phase. Many of the sectors that have driven the economy in the past, such as financial services, oil services, property and shipping are either depressed or being restructured. In addition, the Singapore government has embarked on a productivity drive which has had an impact on sourcing foreign labour, and is trying to encourage growth in new areas such as technology, fintech, biotech, start-ups and more.

With political and economic challenges shaking up South East Asia, which Singapore relies on for growth and activity, how do start-ups and small- and medium-sized business owners find opportunities and thrive in the coming year?

Attendees joined our panelists and moderator, who themselves are successful entrepreneurs specialising locally and regionally; as they shared their outlook for 2018 and thoughts about how small businesses can be successful in the current economic environment.

This event included a full buffet breakfast and time during registration and post event for networking with other members and guests.

About the Moderator

Mark Florance started his career at Arthur Andersen in the turnarounds and insolvency area and then moved to Rothschild in investment banking, where he remained for 23 years. During that time he was involved in corporate finance advisory, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, equity capital markets, debt capital markets and debt restructuring across many industry sectors.

He was initially based in Sydney and moved to Singapore in the early 90s. He then moved to Jakarta to establish Rothschild’s business there, arriving just in time for the full brunt of the Asian financial crisis. He decided to remain in Indonesia as he foresaw opportunities in a market largely abandoned by bankers, and was proved right.

In the mid-nineties Mark moved back to Singapore and was responsible for S.E. Asia for Rothschild. In 2012, he left Rothschild to pursue more entrepreneurial interests.  He founded S.E.A Strategic which focuses on investing in early stage companies as well as assisting in their capital raising.  He is also involved with a company called Treleaven Capital which advises on renewable energy opportunities.  He is also a non-executive director of a UK-listed closed end fund managed by the Aberdeen group.
