Mei-kwei Barker arrived as Director of the British Council Singapore in August 2018 and oversees our work across English language, Education and the Arts. She began her career in the British Council in 1991 and has since worked in British Council operations in Hong Kong, Spain, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, India and Singapore. In her previous role from August 2014 to August 2018, Mei-kwei worked as Area Director South India, overseeing our work in English language, Education and Society, and the Arts across the 5 southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Previous to this, Mei-kwei led our English language work in the United Arab Emirates, overseeing the Dubai, Abu Dhabu and Sharjah teaching centres as well as our government partnership work. In addition to leadership roles for our English language work, Mei-kwei has managed several change projects for the British Council. Mei-kwei was born in Birmingham, UK and spent most of her childhood in Devon before moving to London for education and work. She studied Business Studies at Kingston University and worked in the fashion industry for 5 years before moving into education overseas.
