Scotland at the World Gourmet Summit 2016 and Food & Hotel Asia

In April 2016, Scotland will feature prominently in two of Singapore's highest profile food and drink events - the prestigious World Gourmet Summit and the bi-annual trade show Food & Hotel Asia. 

There is no doubt that Singapore is one of the foodie capitals of Asia. The number of Michelin star chefs as well as the sheer volume of restaurants in the city state is testament to that.
 
Singapore's influence, however, reaches well beyond its own borders and is now a hub for the wider Asia market with many international food and drink brands being imported into Singapore for distribution to other important markets. That is why it has become a priority market for Scotland's own food and drink industry - Singapore was ranked 5th globally last year in terms of the value of Scottish food and drink exports, worth around £200 million a year to the Scottish economy.
 
And in April, Scotland will feature prominently in two of Singapore's highest profile events catering to the food and drink industry, helping build on this success.
 

World Gourmet Summit 2016

 
The first is the prestigious World Gourmet Summit, now in its 20th year, where Scottish seafood, in particular, will take centre stage at the opening and closing ceremonies. Chefs from 18 of Singapore's most famous restaurants will be serving up dishes using the best Scottish salmon, langoustines, scallops and cod.

This will be followed by a special World Gourmet Summit Scottish themed dinner, prepared by celebrated chef Glenn Bowman, for an audience of 100 influential guests. The menu will feature Scottish seafood alongside Scotch beef and Scottish cheeses, all of which will be paired by Highland Park whiskies.
 
This is the third consecutive year that Scottish Development International has partnered with the World Gourmet Summit. In the past, the event has helped to raise awareness of the quality of Scottish produce amongst Singapore's top chefs and restaurants and get more Scottish products featured in their menus.
 
It has also had a positive impact on the exports for the Scottish suppliers involved. John Vallance, who has provided seafood for the event for the past two years has seen orders to Singapore increase by 15%. Last year’s event saw Scotch beef served in Singapore for the first time in over 15 years and has led to regular shipments to Singapore and featuring on the menus of exclusive restaurants such as LeVel 33, Artemis Grill, Odette and Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse.
 

Food & Hotel Asia 2016

 
This year's World Gourmet Summit however, also coincides with the bi-annual trade show Food & Hotel Asia, which is happening in Singapore at the same time.
 
Scottish Development International will be leading a delegation of 15 Scottish companies to the event to help them target new business in the Asia market. This includes some of Scotland's most well known brands such as Highland Spring, Loch Duart, Mackies of Scotland; companies such as Cullisse and Supernature Rapeseed Oils and consolidators such as Brahead Foods and Craft Beer Clan Scotland, representing a number of smaller Scottish brands.
 
The event will help to showcase a much wider range of Scottish products to Singapore's influential importers and buyers and lead to more Scottish products featured on the shelves of Singapore supermarkets as well on hotel menus.
 
Neil McInnes, Head of South East Asia for Scottish Development International, says: "Over the next month, we want to create as much noise as possible about Scotland's food and drink sector and both the World Gourmet Summit and Food & Hotel Asia will allow us to get our message across to a highly influential audience.
 
"We are seeing more and more demand from Scottish companies who are recognising Singapore's importance - both as an important export market in its own right but also as a gateway to other markets in South East Asia and Asia as a whole.
 
Asian consumers are looking for higher quality and premium products and often something that is a little bit different. They're also increasingly interested in the provenance of what they eat. This is where Scotland has such a strong story to tell and during April we'll be doing everything we can to get people in Singapore to eat and to buy Scottish."
