Flexible Working: A Competitive Advantage for Organisations

To compete in uncertain economic times, organisations need to first attract top talent and create an environment that will boost job satisfaction. Although not widely embedded in organisational cultures, employers are acknowledging the business benefits of implementing flexible working practices.

Although not as widely embedded in organisational cultures, the appetite for flexible working is growing fast across APAC. While the region is culturally diverse, employers are acknowledging the business benefits of implementing flexible working practices.

Concerns about employee productivity remain the main obstacle, yet organisations in the region realise that to compete in uncertain economic times they need to first attract top talent and then create an environment that will boost job satisfaction.

What our survey findings reveal is that professionals in the region, even more so than in the UK, have a strong desire to work more flexibly. However, a third of those we surveyed stated they would not feel comfortable asking their employer about flexible working options.

There is a clear stigma that those who work flexibly ‘have and easy life’. We found that three in four professionals in APAC would look for flexible working options, which they deem more important that commission/bonuses, private healthcare insurance and enhanced pension scheme, before joining a new company. Furthermore, 58% of those we surveyed would rather have flexible working than a 5% salary increase, and 40% of those who have turned down a job due to employee benefits was because the company lacked in flexible working options.

Implementing flexible working options poses mutual benefits for both employees and employers. For employees, they get to spend more time with their families and would be happier in their jobs. On the other hand, employers found that employees would be more loyal and likely to stay with the organisation, and feel less stressed.
