Alan Yarrow, The Rt Hon Lord Mayor of the City of London meets members of British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore

We welcomed The Rt Hon Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Alan Yarrow, in partnership with UK Trade & Investment, to the first Leaders in Business Lunch of the year. The BritCham Leaders in Business Lunch series is a platform for thought leaders from a variety of industries to discuss current business issues and trends, and their individual leadership philosophy.

The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Alan Yarrow, visited Singapore from 21 – 23 May to promote London and the UK as the premier provider of financial and professional services. Prior to this, the Lord Mayor visited Sri Lanka & Indonesia.

Ahead of the Leaders in Business Lunch with the Chamber members, the Lord Mayor penned an article for The Business Times on 21 May 2015 highlighting Singapore and London’s shared history of growth. He shared two key messages – “firstly that UK is a great location to do business in, with a diverse range of business opportunities and a thriving cultural centre in its favour. Secondly, it is that Singapore remains an incredibly important location for British companies looking to expand in South-east Asia. Much as the UK remains a gateway for international trade with Europe, so too does Singapore act as a gateway for trade with ASEAN nations.” Click here to read full article.

During the lunch event at the Chamber, the Lord Mayor touched on topics such as:

  • The recent election
  • UK’s commitment to an open economy & the EU
  • Continued strengthening of UK’s partnership with Singapore
  • Global security, cyber security and sustainability
  • Marketing UK & the City of London brand
  • Need for skills and talent upgrades

Stressing on the need for talent and education especially in the financial services industry, the Lord Mayor shared about the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme. The Scheme supports the ‘best and the brightest’ from across the world, to further their education and training in the UK creating future global leaders of Financial Services.

This Scholarship was awarded to Mr Han Yao Guang, an Accountancy Alumnus of the prestigious Nanyang Technological University – which just birthed a new “Medical School” together with London’s Imperial College.

The lunch was followed by an engaging Q&A session with members.
