Brexit: The Next Chapter

Members and guests joined us for the next installment in the financial services Brexit series- Brexit: The Next Chapter. It was a good opportunity to hear an undiluted perspective on the position.
 
There has been a great deal of comment and dare we say speculation on the next chapter of Brexit and we aimed to provide a lucid perspective for businesses and individuals on the UK economy and the legal process.
 
We were delighted to have Tamara Henderson a Senior Economist from Bloomberg and Paul Landless a Partner with Clifford Chance presenting these matters followed by a panel discussion with Michael Starmer-Smith from Deutsche Bank and John Laws from Barclays. 

 

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Tamara is a Ph.D economist with buy- as well as sell-side experience, covering G3 economies and the emerging markets over a span of 25 years. She has focused on FX and rates strategy over the last 13 years and has accumulated a strong track record for her trade ideas. In previous roles, she worked as a strategist for ANZ Banking Group and was deputy head of the International Monetary Fund’s Investment Unit. Tamara is a CFA Charterholder and the author of Fixed Income Strategy: A Practitioner’s Guide to Riding the Curve, published by Wiley. 

 

 
Paul Landless is a partner at the Clifford Chance Singapore office who specialises in structured finance, derivatives and financial markets products, including securitisations, repackagings, structured notes, securities lending and repo. He leads the financial markets team in Singapore and South East Asia. He also has extensive experience in various types of structured transactions, including in relation to commodities trading, and he regularly advises on global and local financial market regulatory developments and financial market infrastructure. He is also a member of the firm's Brexit Markets Group and recently has been very active with FinTech developments in Singapore. 
 
Paul has worked in our London, Hong Kong and Singapore offices and helps lead the FinTech Practice, ASEAN Focus Group, Philippines Focus Group.
 
 
 
Since June 2011 Michael has led the Corporate Banking Coverage team for Deutsche Bank in UK & Ireland. He is also part of the management team for the Bank’s wider Corporate & Investment Banking UK coverage franchise.
 
As well as managing a team of relationship managers and supporting staff he is responsible for the Bank’s treasury business with a number of critical accounts including: BP; BHP; Rio Tinto and Vodafone. 
 
In his previous role, Michael led the Bank’s investment grade corporate lending business across EMEA (ex. Germany) including throughout the global financial crisis.
 
Since joining Deutsche as an associate twenty years ago he has specialised in marketing and cross-selling a wide range of investment and corporate banking products and services, with some focus on financing/refinancing advice and delivery, often linked to M&A. Key deals have included franchise building loan, bond and equity deals for Inbev; Rio Tinto; Dubai Ports and Xstrata. 
 
Michael spent 2004 in the Bank’s New York office on an expatriate assignment working with North American energy and utility clients. 
 
Before his banking career he was sponsored through university, where he read history, by the British Army and spent four years as an Artillery officer serving worldwide.
 

John Laws is a Managing Director and Head of Regulatory and Government Relations, Asia Pacific, at Barclays. He is based in Singapore.

John works closely with Country and Compliance management, acting as a key escalation and relationship point with all primary Asia Pacific regulators. He collaborates closely with Barclays’ senior executives in the region to further develop the firm’s relationships with key regulators and government policy makers. John also advises Barclays’ public policy positions on banking and financial sector issues.

In his role leading market reform, john focuses on engaging and partnering with businesses and infrastructure teams within Barclays to ensure a coordinated response to key g20 developments and all related regional regulations.

Before taking on his current role, john was COO for Global Foreign Exchange, Prime Services, Trading, Asia Pacific, and eCommerce. Prior to joining Barclays in 2009, John spent 14 years with Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong and Tokyo and seven years in New York, where he became Assistant Treasurer and Head of Global Funding and Liquidity Management. He also spent seven years with Bankers Trust in a variety of roles including trading, sales and finance.

In 2009, John became a member of the ISDA (International Swaps and Derivatives Association) Asia Steering Committee. And, in 2014, he became Barclays’ representative on the board of ASIFMA (Asia Securities Industry & Financial Markets Association). He also sits on the board of DDRS, the Asian Trade Depository of DTCC.

John holds a degree in Financial Administration from the University of New England and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG.
