Brexit, Trump, Technology, Rise of RMB: Asia’s Place in a Grave New World

Globalization, long considered the best route to economic prosperity and the apparent norm for decades, may not be as inevitable as we think, and may be about to go abruptly into reverse.

Stephen D King, former Chief Economist and now Senior Advisor to HSBC, has just written a powerful new book entitled “A Grave New World” to ask ourselves, what went wrong? Can this march towards isolationism be halted? And what is the likely impact upon our future prosperity?

This meeting is a unique opportunity for Stephen King to address the key issues facing financial services and global businesses in Asia.
  • Why globalization is being rejected?
  • Reviewing the 21st century’s key challenges: migration, technology, and currency wars.
  • How do current developments – Trump in the USA, the UK’s Brexit, developments in Europe and international trade negotiations – all fit into this longer-term scenario?
  • How will Asia be affected, not only with respect to China, but for ASEAN and for a financial and business hub like Singapore?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Stephen King is HSBC’s Senior Economic Adviser and a successful author.

In his new book, Grave New World: The End of Globalization, the Return of History (Yale), Stephen argues that globalization, often thought to be the best route towards economic prosperity, is by no means inevitable.

Stephen’s previous book, When the Money Runs Out: The End of Western Affluence (Yale) was selected as a “book of the year” by the Financial Times, the Economist and the Times.  It has subsequently been translated into Complex Chinese, Croat, Czech, Italian, Mandarin and Russian. His first book, Losing Control (Yale), was published in 2010.

In 2014, Stephen became a member of the Financial Times “Exchange” which, in the FT’s words, offers “agenda-setting commentary from leading policymakers, academics and writers around the world”.  He writes regularly for a number of leading newspapers worldwide and frequently appears on television and radio.  In 2015, Stephen was appointed as special adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Committee.
Stephen’s career began at H.M.Treasury, where he was an economic adviser within the UK civil service.  He studied at New College, Oxford.  In his spare time, he plays the piano.
