Special Seminar Series

Start-up Series: A Game of Risk and Reward

As new businesses kick off, filled with dreams of success and glory, the harsh realization of the day to day churn it takes to run a modern business can sometimes be overwhelming. Legal, financial, operational, resource management and marketing all need to be addressed carefully, and often business owners do not have the key skill sets to get these things right. The goal of this series is to guide SME’s to all the available resources, both public and private, which can assist companies to fulfil their visions as sustainable going concerns. Keep a look out for more events in this series!

Speaking from her experience advising over 100 startups in the last 18 months, and a previous career as a corporate lawyer, Lucy will provide an overview of the typical startup journey focusing on how to reduce your business’ chances of failing (and save time and money) by focusing on the right things at the right time in your growth.

Lucy will discuss:
  • Incorporation & compliance,
  • dealing with underperforming suppliers,
  • protecting your intellectual property,
  • business planning,
  • seeking investment,
  • the balance of power,
  • employment issues,
  • learning to fail and much more!

Highly recommended for startups and SMEs on their journey to growth, investors into startups and anyone interested in the ecosystem.

This session is intended to provide a high level overview of all the most common issues facing small companies in their journey to success. The Entrepreneur & Small Business group hopes it will allow the audience to contextualise the other talks in this series and highlight to them quick and cost effective ways to protect their businesses and improve their chances of succeeding.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Lucy took a conventional corporate path from Oxford University to big law firms in the City of London and then Singapore. But, after spending time amongst the startup ecosystem in Singapore, she decided to set up her own consulting firm, Upstart Alliance, to empower startups and SMEs with affordable, top quality support from leading legal, finance and strategy advisors.

Having spent years with large corporates, Lucy wanted to do something meaningful with her training and experience and that meant working with clients who inspired her, and who were as passionate as she was about doing things differently. She and her team have worked with over 100 startups and SMEs in the last 18 months, and look forward to helping many more.
