Highlights of the 17th Annual Business Awards Gala Presentation Dinner, 29th September 2016 at the Shangri-La Hotel

Congratulations to the winners of our 17th Annual Business Awards who were celebrated at a Gala Presentation and Dinner of almost 300 guests on 29th September 2016 at the Shangri La Hotel. The Awards were presented to the winners in nine categories by our Guest of Honour Minister S. Iswaran, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry), Chamber President Bicky Bhangu and His Excellency Scott Wightman, the British High Commissioner. The BBC’s Sharanjit Leyl presented the Awards for the 11th year.

WINNERS

OUTSTANDING UK-SINGAPORE COLLABORATION  

 

 

This newly created award celebrates Singapore-registered enterprises that demonstrate strong collaboration between Singapore and the UK. The judges, His Excellency Scott Wightman, British High Commissioner, was looking for successful collaborations which lead to growth, innovation, job opportunities and investment, whether in the UK, Singapore or ASEAN.

 

Discussion the winning entry, His Excellency stated: 

 

"Dyson have developed the strong collaborative relationship between their world class team of engineers and scientists in the UK and their R+D team in Singapore. This has been instrumental in the launch in the last 12 months of Dyson's new Supersonic hairdryer, conceptualised in the UK and developed by the cross-functional Singapore-based team, working across electronics, mechanical and design engineering. This is a great example of UK/Singapore collaboration at the cutting edge of technology and design, contributing to economic growth and high quality jobs in both countries."

CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT

 

 

 

This award recognises companies that demonstrate business growth by putting the customer at the heart of its business. The judge, Russell Anderson, Managing Director APAC for Jaguar LandRover, looked for strong and publicly visible customer-centric values that generate demonstrable improvements to profitability and customer satisfaction.

 

Discussion the winning entry, he stated: 

 

"Rolls Royce were able to clearly and succinctly demonstrate that Customer Satisfaction and Engagement was being placed at the heart of their plans whilst at the same time demonstrated their customer service improvement and the measurement of the success of their Customer Engagement.."

EXCELLENCE IN INNOVATION

 

 

Innovation drives the longevity and success of an organisation or a brand. Judge Steve Leonard, CEO of SG Innovate, looked for entries that demonstrated how businesses have made innovation key to their success, or have utilised innovative approaches to overcome a problem or challenge.

 

Discussion the winning entry, he stated: 

 

"Lloyds have clearly articulated their business story, their challenges, how they were tackling those challenges and how they were committed to future initiatives around innovation. The Lloyds story was powerful because “innovating” in a 300 year old institution is much more difficult and the Lloyds chairman has made public statements about their commitment to continuous innovation and this reinforces their commitment to the future."

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFORMATION

 

 


As the pace of digital evolution increases, this award recognises businesses that embrace new technologies. The judge, Wynthia Goh, Chief Digital Officer for Aviva Asia, looked for smart uses of technology to improve business results, productivity and customer satisfaction.

 

Discussion the winning entry, she stated:

 

"Kaer’s story and achievement in its business journey demonstrated the most impactful transformation on itself, its customers and its customer’s customers. They have changed the business and process model of how air conditioning systems should be managed. Kaer’s business leaders understand the value of transformation, successfully executed their business and technology transformation with clear, measurable results."

SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES

 

 


Any business, big or small, has an impact on society be it social, cultural, economic or environmental. This award highlights and recognises businesses and business models that not only conform to legal standards of best practice and governance but also contribute and invest in the community within which they operate. Judged by Esther An, Chief Sustainability Officer for City Developments Ltd.

 

Discussion the winning entry, she stated:

 

"DBS has demonstrated firm commitment to CSR. It has an effective strategy to embrace its CSR initiatives to its business to create an impact and add value to its business. The extent of its initiative and outreach is impressive and it is a deserving winner."

INVESTING IN PEOPLE

Unleashing and channelling the untapped potential of its people is a challenge that leading organisations see as critical to their success. Judge Su-Yen Wong, CEO of the Human Capital Leadership Institute, looked for businesses with modern and people-embracing policies as well as in house training and development schemes.

 

Discussion the winning entry, she stated:

 

"Even as relatively young organization, Salt has implemented a holistic approach to the business, including structured processes and systems, to enable future growth. Salt’s emphasis on creating a culture and instilling behaviours that enable business performance stand out. Salt demonstrate that regardless of company size or stage of development, there is a compelling case for investment in people. And, there are specific initiatives that can be implemented to attract, retain and develop talent."

EMBRACING DIVERSITY

 

 

 

 

An organisation’s success depends on its people and its culture. This award recognises organisations that demonstrate and lead a working culture that values the differences between people and provide unbiased and equal opportunities. Judged by Dr. Tanvi Gautam, Program Director for Diversity & Inclusion at Singapore Management University's Executive Development Programmes.

 

Discussion the winning entry, Dr. Gautam stated:

 

"The way the British Council has woven itself into the local fabric is impressive. Their approach of education and arts and a view to the future is inspirational."

SME EXCELLENCE

 

 

This award will go to an outstanding company with less than 50 employees worldwide that demonstrates strong business growth, implementation of innovative business strategies and market leadership in its sector. Judge Callum Laing, Partner at The Marketing Group and Unity Group, looked for Singapore-centric evidence of ingenuity, impact of initiatives through measurable results, consistent performance, long term plans and initiatives in the overall business.

 

Discussion the winning entry, he stated:

 

"It is clear Capital Springboard have credibility and authority in their industry through the team and other businesses. Capital Springboard are addressing a very real problem for small business owners and creating an opportunity for investors. Capital Springboard clearly demonstrated their success and their ability to scale up the solution."

OUTSTANDING YOUNG PROFESSIONAL - ROSANNA TRIGG, THE YARD

 

 

Young professionals are instrumental in the success of a business. Judge Goh Swee Chen, Chairperson of Shell Companies in Singapore, looked for Singapore-based professionals of 35-years of age and below who have outperformed and made a measurable impact within their organisation or industry. 

 

Discussion the winning entry, she stated:

 

"Rosanna is a young lady who combines what she loves with a business venture that she single-handedly built. She is tenacious in pursuing her dreams, brings creativity into what she does and importantly, works tirelessly to improve the lives of many who share her passion. She has made a broad impact in the Singaporean sports & fitness scene."

Scott Wightman – British High Commissioner


Scott arrived at the British High Commission, Singapore in May 2015 as British High Commissioner.
 

He began his career in the Diplomatic Service in 1983 and has worked in the British Embassies in Beijing, Paris, Rome and, most recently, in the Republic of Korea, where he was the UK ambassador. Scott’s ties with Asia continued during his tenure as Director for the Asia Pacific region in the FCO from 2008 to 2010. Scott is from Edinburgh in Scotland and has a degree in French from the University of Edinburgh.

Mr Steve Leonard – CEO, SG Innovate


Steve Leonard is a technology-industry leader with a wide range of experiences, having played key roles in building several global technology companies in Software, Hardware and Services. In his current role as Chief Executive of SG Innovate, Mr Leonard has been chartered to help translate some of the early tech R&D innovations that Singapore has gained a global reputation for, into commercial success by connecting them with the relevant industry corporates, start-ups and funds across sectors such as Digital Tech, FinTech, CleanTech and MedTech.


Prior to his current role, Mr Leonard served as the Executive Deputy Chairman of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) within the Singapore Government, focusing on further developing the Smart Nation vision for the nation.

 
Wynthia Goh

Technology Transformation


Wynthia Goh – Chief Digital Director, Aviva Asia


Wynthia is a digital native who first jumped headlong into digital when she joined her first Internet startup in 1995. She has held regional and global roles in product management, business development, venture investment, digital strategy and marketing. She had led regional digital teams for Nokia, eBay, Avaya and SAP. At Aviva, she is currently the Chief Digital Officer for Asia and looks after digital in the Asia region. She also leads the Aviva Digital Garage in Singapore.


Wyn is a Fulbright scholar and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy, with double majors in Systems Thinking and Environmental Policy from the State University of New York. She also has a Bachelor of Business from the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.

 
Esther An

Sustainability Initiatives


Esther An – Chief Sustainability Officer, City Developments Limited


Esther joined City Developments Limited (CDL) in 1995 to set up the Company’s Corporate Communications department and subsequently established the company’s CSR/Sustainability portfolio. A pioneer CSR practitioner for over 20 years and a committee member of the Global Compact Network Singapore, which is the local network of UN Global Compact, she is instrumental in building up the company’s leadership in Sustainability.


A signatory of the UN Caring for Climate initiative and a champion in green building and sustainability, Esther is a member of the World Green Building Council’s Corporate Advisory Board and the Urban Land Institute Women’s Leadership Initiative Singapore Steering Committee.

 
Dr Tanvi Gautam

Embracing Diversity


Dr Tanvi Gautam – Program Director, Diversity & Inclusion Programme, (SMU-Executive Development)


Dr. Tanvi Gautam is the Program Director, Diversity & Inclusion Programme, (SMU-Executive Development). She also teaches courses in Organizational Behaviour and Human resource Management at the business school at SMU. In addition Dr. Tanvi is the Managing Partner of Global People Tree, an international HR consulting and training firm.


Her key areas of specialization are innovation in talent management, cross cultural leadership, work life integration, knowledge management as well as women and leadership.


Dr. Gautam has worked in three continents (Asia, Australia, US) and brings a multi-cultural perspective to the projects she takes up. She is often sought for her expertise in engaging a culturally diverse audience in conversation on topics that cut across corporate and cultural boundaries.


She is very passionate about women and leadership and helping women play a larger role in organizations. Dr. Gautam has her own podcast series where she highlights the thought leadership of women from across the globe. She is also the curator of the first ever list of 50 women from India to follow on Twitter: an attempt to highlight the women leading their niche in South Asia.

 
Su-Yen Wong

Investing in People


Su-Yen Wong – Chief Executive Officer, Human Capital Leadership Institute


Su-Yen Wong is Chief Executive Officer of the Human Capital Leadership Institute, which was established by the Ministry of Manpower, the Singapore Economic Development Board and the Singapore Management University to develop global leaders with a strong understanding of leading in Asia, as well as to build Asian leaders with the ability to lead on the global stage.


She brings over twenty years’ experience in business strategy, organization transformation, human capital and leadership development. She has been based in various cities across Asia since 1997, and has worked with leading organizations across North America and Asia in a broad range of industries including high-tech, financial services, oil and gas, retail, consumer goods, and the public sector.


Su-Yen is an active member of the Singapore Institute of Directors, Women Corporate Directors, and the Young Presidents’ Organization. She holds a B.A. (summa cum laude) in music and computer science from Linfield College and an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

 
Callum Laing

SME Excellence


Callum Laing – Partner, The Marketing Group and Unity Group


Callum Laing is a partner in the Private Equity firm Unity-Group. He is co-founder and non-executive director of The Marketing Group PLC and is the CEO of the Key Person of Influence program in Asia. In the past 20 years he has started, built, bought and sold half a dozen businesses in a range of industries.


Born in New Zealand and then raised and educated in Cambridge, England, Callum is an experienced entrepreneur and business professional who understands how to establish and grow business enterprises on a global basis. He is also an experienced public presenter who often speaks at events across the Asia Pacific on various subjects. He is regularly featured on broadcast and in print media across the region and beyond.


He was recently awarded the Asia Best Employer ‘Outstanding Leadership’ award and he is a Mentor / Advisor to DBS Business Class

 
Goh Swee Chen

Outstanding Young Professional


Goh Swee Chen – Chairperson, Shell Companies in Singapore


Goh Swee Chen has been Chairperson of Shell Companies in Singapore since October 2014. Concurrent to her country chair role, Swee Chen is also Vice President, Commercial Fuels & Lubricants – Asia Pacific, a role she undertook in 2011. Shell operates direct Fuels & Lubricants businesses in more than 10 countries in Asia Pacific.


Swee Chen joined Shell in 2003. A professional with broad global experiences, Swee Chen has led businesses in Sales & Marketing and IT. During her time in IT, she concluded one of the largest strategic sourcing deals in the industry. Prior to Shell, Swee Chen was with Procter & Gamble. She started her early career in IBM.


Swee Chen holds a degree in Information Science from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and an MBA from the Chicago Booth, University of Chicago.
